I expected the weather to be worse. I knew the rain would probably come. I just hoped it’d stay away long enough for us to be able to get a peek.

I had a day planned. I wanted to watch science videos and make projects. I wanted to spend time outside with my kids and be the perfect mother. I wanted it to be fun.

The videos I picked were already watched at school. They weren’t new and exciting like I’d hoped so I could teach my kids all about solar eclipses. My son was able to tell me all about everything I had planned on teaching.

The weekend before took a turn and I hadn’t gone to the store for craft supplies. There was no project being done today. Guess we’ll just have to go outside and find stuff to do out of boredom.

Dad came home early. I secretly wished that he would but also wanted this time to be educational with my kids. Instead, we all hung outside on the porch waiting for it to happen, dad making food and dad answering of questions.

Then the moment finally happened! Pitch black. It was so cool! We were in the path of totality and day became night. I took my eclipse glasses off and look at each of their faces – staring at the sky in awe.

That was the day I wanted. The perfect day. Nothing went as planned. No one cared though. We all just sat peacefully in the 3 minutes of darkness smiling and staring in wonder.

I wish I could have captured every second of that afternoon and bottled that joy up to carry with me but a picture in my mind will have to do.
